In Memory of Birgid Ebsen, AOCA 1959
The Lisa Visser Graduate Scholarship
Born on July 29, 1939 in Hamburg, Germany, Birgid (nee Ebsen) Thompson emigrated to Canada in 1955. In 1959, she attended the Ontario College of Art to study Drawing and Painting.
She married Keith Thompson in 1966, and had two children, Kari in 1967 and Nils in 1971. Professionally, she worked at the Royal Ontario Museum and then the Price of Wales Heritage Centre as an exhibit designer, and worked privately on painting, drawing, batik and quilting. Birgid also had a fine hand at calligraphy, which she learned from her father Alf Ebsen, who was the Canadian master until his death in 1990. She was a member of the Canmore Artist and Artisan's Guild, and the Canmore Cabin Quilters. Birgid passed on September 15, 2016 at the age of 77.
This scholarship will be awarded to a top student in Year 2 of the Drawing and Painting program. It will be granted at a minimum of $1,000 per year for five years.
