In Memory of Will Davies, Class of 1947
Will Davies, one of Canada’s most esteemed illustrators and one of OCAD University’s greatest instructors passed away on September 3rd, 2016. He was 92 years old.
In 1944, Davies enrolled in what was then the Ontario College of Art in a four-year “Commercial Art” program. He was hired by a recruiter from Photo Engravers in Toronto right out of his third year. He went on to become the most sought-after advertising illustrator in Canada for many decades.
In 1969, Will began teaching at OCA. For the next two decades, he shared his wealth of knowledge and tremendous skills with hundreds of students, many of whom went on to their own successful careers in the graphic arts. One of those graduates is current OCAD U instructor and internationally celebrated artist Gary Taxali, who was the recipient of the Will Davies Award in his graduating year. The family would like to set up a fund once again, now in his memory.
